Located on the Niagara Peninsula, the Niagara Fruit Belt extends along the south shore of Lake Ontario and is Canada's most important area for the production of grapes, peaches, pears, plums and cherries. The proximity to Lake Ontario benefits the Niagara Fruit Belt because of its moderating effect on year-round temperatures.
Much of the fruit is grown on the plain below the Niagara Escarpment, an out-cropping of rock formed by glacier movement. As the glaciers moved across the region, deposits were left which resulted in various soils including well-drained sands and gravels to poorly drained silts and clays. These soils, with their gently sloping northerly exposure, combined with a mild climate, have made this one of North America's most distinctive fruit-growing areas.
